Post-secondary vocational and technical education of floral art Weihenstephan

The “Staatliche Fachschule für Blumenkunst Weihenstephan” was founded in 1925 as a faculty of the Weihenstephan College. It became an independent college in 1971. A 2-years senior vocational education for florists to become a technical master of floristry is provided. Every year there are two classes with a maximum of 20 students per class. Students applying must have successfully completed an apprenticeship as florists, have at least one year work experience and pass an entrance examination. The full time course deepens and improves the students’ competence and skills in the field of floral art and design, botanical studies, business economics as well as in their system of psychology and marketing. The course qualifies students to hold management positions, set up their own businesses and lecture in the field of vocational education. The college stimulates international mobility. This is an important part of their strategic vision to become a “Europa-Schule”. The college educates students to be able to become freelance florists in every European country. The school also support the exchange of teachers and of students as well. All staff members are involved in students’ mobility and teachers´exchange, and welcome students and teachers from all over Europe.
The college is a partner of FLORNET since 2002 and is a sending and receiving organisation. Out of experience the exchange of staff members and placement of students gives understanding to the different tasks for vocational training in colleges and firms in Europe. This also provides the opportunity to increase the exchange of knowledge, different traditions and cultures. The connection between the colleges and the firms abroad will support new innovation into floristry, the methods in vocational training, and integrate education and entrepreneurship.
As a partner of the FLORNET transnational network the college integrated “Weihenstephan’s Floral Design” as a module of the network. Within this network the college is a European competence centre for “Floristry, Dimension and Languages”. Together with the regional partners in this competence centre (branch organisations, enterprises and experts) the college developed the international modules “Bond of life” (2007), “Lifestyle & Design” (2008) and “Saying farewell” (2009). “B Bizzy – marketing concepts for floral designers” (2010)
Furthermore the international cooperation between the FLORNET colleges and the enterprises will be strengthened. The principal is a member of the board of governors of FLORNET.
Together with the international branch organisation for florists (Florint) the college/principal is co-operating on a strategic level: they work on the development of the international education for certified florists to become a “European Master in Floral Design”.
